Fribourg, is a mid-size European city developing at a fast pace.
The foreseen Agglomeration scenario, envisaging Fribourg sustainable development, proposes a city building on its own structure and preserving its actual footprint: a vision as well as an achievable goal.
Contrasting the demand for new residential “additions”, the scenario proposes a process intensifying density within the existing urban structure.
The project is grounded on new and improved relations between built fabric and open space, meanwhile providing a new set of public and collective spaces.
Strategically designing densification process, the project organizes a new system of central places enhancing the neighbourhoods’ social life, diversifying social composition and fostering a new mix of programs. At the same time the densification program foster a new mobility system deeply grounded in the use of urban railways, “soft mobility” and public transport, dramatically reducing the demand for individual motorized mobility.
